In the Cromwellian dispossessions of 1652 the Kennedy landholders lost 30,000 acres of their Tipperary lands. Many were banished to Connacht. Rather than submit to the conquerors some Kennedys defied the banishment. Several Kennedy families and their retainers created a new life for themselves in the mountain wilderness. For many years they lived and raised their sons and daughters and established themselves in an invisible world where outsiders feared to tread. Their descendants, wherever they are now located, can look back with pride to the story of courage and fortitude that we have been able to research and relate.
