We begin 2015 with a name change. Over 34 monthly editions of “The Mountainy Kennedys” our world-wide readership has grown to cover not only the descendents of those Kennedys who went into the mountains of Tipperary after the Cromwellian dispossessions of 1652, but also the descendants of many other Kennedys. Some of these Kennedys remained on the plains of North Tipperary while others had moved from the traditional Kennedy homelands long before Cromwell.

All descendants of Irish Kennedys and other interested people are very welcome to join the mailing list. We hope to make the mailing list very interesting and informative during 2015. If you have contributions that you would like to share they will be most welcome.

After over 350 years the memories of the Mountainy Kennedys of their descent from “The Lords of Ormond” had faded. The lines of descent of the Kennedys who went into the mountains rather than transplant to Connacht have now provided historical reference points. Through the contributions of many individuals to gathering and sharing information, the story of the Mountainy Kennedys is emerging from the obscurity of hundreds of years.

Best wishes and compliments of the season to all of our mailing list members around the world. We hope Christmas and New Year is all you wish it to be for your families and yourself. As we reflect on the year that is almost finished we can see that we have made good progress in our continuing efforts to research and foster the history of the great family of Kennedys from whom we are descended. My thoughts go back to a cloudy, overcast hillside in the mountains at Windygap in July where many of us gathered to inaugurate the first Kennedy chief for four hundred years. In Rody Kennedy of Rearcross we now have a chief to rally around who has the challenging task to attempt to keep his clan in order. All Kennedys and their descendants are always welcome at Rody’s fine establishment where the display of his scroll and white wand of office confirm his appointment.

Welcome to this issue of the Mountainy Kennedys mailing list. We cover many aspects of the history of the Kennedys of North Tipperary and particularly the Kennedys who went into the mountain areas following the Cromwellian dispossessions of the 1650s.

With the recent inauguration of the first Irish Kennedy chief for hundreds of years we now have Chief Rody Kennedy of Rearcross, Tipperary, for Kennedys and their relatives to rally around.

Many people are now becoming aware of the proud history of the Kennedys and of their fortitude and perseverance which serve as an inspiration for us all.
